Long time no Blog...

This last weekend was a weekend-o-cycling! Saturday was a training day on the Olympic Peninsula and Sunday was the first race of the season! I, of course, had a chest cold and was not as strong as I would have hoped, but finished well and am pleased. My favorite thing about cycling this season is I am on a great team with some of the strongest women. They are fantastically athletic and such supportive cheerleaders.

Being a member of this team is a great reminder of how strong and supportive women can be in groups, much different from the groups of women most of us are exposed to in high school and sometimes beyond.

Besides coffee, I almost always start the day with a piece of scrap paper. Today it was an envelope, the day before the back of a used post-it. I write to-do lists, do sketches, empty my brain of random quotes or segments of an overheard conversation, pleasingly-paired words and what-have-yous.
Today it struck me how these little remnants of the day are almost journal-like, in that they indicate what was/is on my mind, events, plans, and ideas. Maybe I should start keeping them...

Ok, the scarf is reminding me of some semi-permeable membrane, it has holes (I bound off 5sts, then cast on 5sts the next row), it feels like some cellular structure, like maybe the endoplasmic reticulum or something.

New Beginnings...

This past year was full of new things, new businesses, new lessons, new learning, new friends, and I can only hope that in 2009 I am blessed with as much learning and support as I had in 2008. I have learned that while I might want to take charge and be in control 100% of the time, the reins aren't always in my hands (as in, sometimes the economy steers train), and that is okay. I learned that my favorite color is grey and that hot chocolate before bed helps me sleep nightmare free.

I also discovered my passion for scarves, neck covering makes for overall cozyness. Today I started a new scarf knitted out of wool sock yarn. I plan to make it huge and dye it grey, here's to new beginnings!

Updates...

Okay, so I have been working on what has turned out to be the sweater from hell, so much cabling, and now I have decided that I can not stand to look at the color anymore. What to do? But I must keep knitting because the store is so slow, thank you recession, that I have to do something to keep my mitts busy. So anyways, here is a pic of my 'progress'...the back, both the fronts, and the beginning of the sleeves (I am knitting them at the same time)

On the bright side, look at who I get to spend my days with...

I am so lucky to have him to keep me sane and grounded during these crazy times. Thank you to the adoption angels who sent me this amazing creature who never ceases to put a smile on my face, keep me cozy and cuddly.

Bean Spill Alert: I am knitting the Frost Jacket from Nora Gaughan's Knitting Nature. I am knitting it with some Manos Del Uruguay Wool that I 'stole' from my mother's stash, yumm!

I purchase this amazing hand-spun on Etsy from Knitty Dirty Girl a week ago. I purchased the only skein available and had no plans as to what to knit with it, but fell in love with the colors and the description/name:

After finishing my last shrug my fingers have been itching to knit, knit, knit. And I have some stashed yarn, but could not for the life of me decide what I wanted to do with it.

On my way to work my neck felt a little exposed, a little chilly. Then it hit me, it is time to knit a new scarf! Duh!

Fridays don't mean much to me since I usually work 7+ days a week, but Kinsey from Trophy Cupcakes usually brings me 'breakfast' on Friday mornings. 'Breakfast" consists of three mini-cupcakes, (this morning it was a vanilla chocolate, a snowball (chocolate with coconut) and a red velvet) with a giant latté topped with whipped cream. She takes such good care of me, thanks Kinz, you make my days.

Hooray! I have decided to start knitting again, I found the perfect project from the Knitty archives, and the perfect yarn from my lys, Bad Woman Yarn, I think I am going to knit it in Plymouth Baby Alpaca Grande on size 13 US needles in a light grey color! Can wait, but I had to order the yarn, I will keep you posted when I cast on!

This time of year reminds me mostly of one thing, back-to-school. With that comes haircuts, shopping for clothes and school supplies and...YEAR BOOK PHOTOS.
I would always call my friends and consult my sister on what to wear for year book photo day.
While it seemed like a big deal, it recently became clear to me that what really matters is how you wear your hair and whether or not you have a giant zit festering on your glistening pubescent forehead.
I was recently turned on to "yearbook yourself". This provided almost an hours worth of entertainment on a slow day.

So, as it turns out I am not very good at following instruction, which I always thought was something I totally had under my belt. Anyways, I have been playing with my new HOLGA camera, and it took some time to figure it out. What I learned:
1. Obtain, and use the right film.
2. Understand the focus distances and abide by them.
3. Choose your format and make sure the inside format matches the outside of the camera's format.
4. Wind the spool unless you want multi-exposures.
5. Do not drop you precious HOLGA.

Eww and Ouch

Hi friends,
Yikes, someone has been a derelict blogger. I have been super busy with the store and working out the details of the new clothing line, been riding my bike like a maniac training for this, and, of course playing with Luigi.
Last Sunday I got in a bike crash, going too fast down hill around a hairpin, this is 5 days post crash.

All you can say is 'YUCK'.
I have some big knitting plans for fall, which I will reveal soon. I miss you all and will hope over to your blog in the next week!

Summer Time Antics

We're Having a Heat Wave...

A tropical heat wave, and I love it! So does Luigi!
Heatwaves mean several things to me and Luigi
1. Sunbathing, Luigi gets in more of this than I do.

2. Lolly-gagging is encouraged.
3. I can finally where my bubble-hem super-short sumer dress! Luigi also loves a good bubble hem

4. Melty ice cream sandwiches are in abundance; we shared one with our blogless friend Kate on Saturday.
5. Stoop parties with friends always include BBQ's and city sunsets (Luigi often gets bbqed treats too!)

Ahhh, Summer in the city, it doesn't get much better!

Last Sunday's Fun

I went out to play with horses last Sunday. After not horsing around for a bit it felt great to get out there, of course I was sore for like three days after.

So in case you didn't know, it is My Little Pony's 25th Birthday this year! I was just...looking around on their website (you know, for fun)...when I stumbled upon this little cutie above.

The best part about this pony...it's name: "MY LITTLE PONY BUTTERFLY ISLAND SUNNY SCENT PINEAPPLE PARADISE Pony". Can you believe that? Is that the longest my little pony name or what? It cracked me up.

Time Trial

This weekend was another Time Trial. This time there were two huge hills one was a 10% grade for a mile!!! Yikes
Good news, I didn't feel like barfing this time. Bad news, I went off course less than a mile into the race, and as soon as I realized, had to turn around and get back in the game, but I still came in 15th overall the girls! It was pouring rain the whole race, but I think that may have made me ride faster, with the promise of a hot shower at the end! Here is a shot taken just before the finish line...

I am just about to finish this book, "Friday Night Knitting Club" by Kate Jacob, it has been a great read. I have been unable to afford to start any new knitting projects so I figured I could at least read about knitting and then Carie's Mom brought me this book!
I also have a cycling race this weekend; I am racing both on Saturday and Sunday, and I am pretty excited! Luigi will join me (as official cheerleader) on Saturday, then Sunday he might have to stay with my parents because the race is 44 miles and I would hate to leave him in the car for a few hours.
Other than that, nothing new, just plodding along...

Luigi is just turning out to be the most fabulous friend, sales assistant, seat warmer and cuddler I could have ever asked for. He is featured above in "flip-n-fold mode", one of his favorite cuddle/sleep positions (so cute!). I am so glad to have adopted him and can't imagine why I waited so long to get a friend.
This is a busy week, we should be getting in new summer clothes atthe store, and I have a big bike race this weekend, two days of racing! I will keep you posted with stories and pictures!

Sorry I have been absent for a bit, working on juggling about a thousand things with two hands...One thing I have been up to is using Adobe Illustrator on a trial run in order to make posters, postcards, etc for the store. Adobe Illustrator is, well, so much fun, I am loving playing with it!

I figured I would make some new art while I was at it...
This piece is titled, "Grapes".

The text, "do we feel it to be acceptable" is something I have been thinking about; we judge our reactions, feelings and emotions and whether or not they are 'acceptable'. It is interesting and peaks my curiosity...

Weekend Fun!

Hi Friends,
Thanks for all the well wishes! I had a great weekend, the race was a blast even though I was not as fast as I had hoped, here is a picture of our team warming up, I am on the far right, and my dad (he raced too!) is in the yellow on the far right.

After the race I went drove down to Portland. First I met up with Beth, who I just can not get enough of, it's like we are long lost sisters, then we headed over to see New Friend's band play at The Doug Fir
New Friend and I spent the night at a very cool new hotel in Portland, The Ace Hotel. There was an old photobooth in the lobby, we had to indulge...

Luigi seems to be getting along great in his new home, he is so trusting of me and just wants to spend all day in my lap, the photoshoot was a stretch. He was like, "Wait, me sit in chair, but not on your lap?" I am so so happy to have a friend like him that can come to work, sleep in my bed (rockstar 'friend' is on an international rock and roll tour...hopefully he doesn't mind company).
*Oh, and he is a two year old Italian Greyhound who I adopted from an Italian Greyhound Rescue Organization.

I grew up with large dogs (like 70-100 Lbs.), and had little experience with smaller breeds until recently when a friend got a french bull dog (Maisy).
Since I finished school I knew it was only a matter of time before I found a dog and fell in love, turns out...I am smitten by a little guy (18 Lbs.) named Luigi.
He could not be more perfect. In fact, we have a lot in common, we love the couch, don't like the cold, like clothes (especially knitted things), don't really like getting our feet wet, and like our dinners warm. He is the dog I have been waiting for and more. Thank you Kat (his foster mom) for loving him until he found me.
I will try not to gush too often, but he is just so darn cute!

OMG, best Sunday Ever!
I have been keeping a secret under wraps for a bit because I was not sure all the pieces would fall into place, but I am getting a new friend...

I will be picking him up tomorrow! I can't wait, he is an Italian Greyhound, two years old!

So after meeting my new friend, I headed into Portland to see Beth,

we always have a good time together, we are like long lost sisters. We shopped around the Pearl District in Portland, and then sampled some goods from here. The cupcake featured above was Beth's choice, chocolate chip cake with a cookie dough core, topped with vanilla bean butter cream and a mini chocolate chip cookie. We both agreed it was like three deserts in one! Yummo!

The Contest has come to a close and I am pleased/embarrassed to announce that my outfit was from Forever Twenty One, in the Twelve by Twelve department.

Friday Outfit

Last night I was supposed to watch Throw Me The Statue play (my 'new friend's' band) at Neumos, but MY LICENSE WAS EXPIRED...UGH, and they wouldn't let me in...unbelievable, AND I was even on the "list"...ugh.

So I spent the morning in the DMV obtaining a new license so I can see them play in two weeks at another Seattle venue.

On the bright side though, my 'new friend' gave me one of their t-shirts as a consolation prize. I had to wear it today to show off that I have a 'new friend' who is a rockstar!
Had to pair the shirt with some jeans that just scream 'Seattle indie-rock'...

and, of course...some 'rockin' heels made by Corso Como

Love these heels, so comfy, I wear them at least twice a week.

Sarah at Life With... is having a contest on collections. I collect horse shoes from horses I love, have loved, or have owned, or even just ridden. My collection is at my parents house, so I did a little doodle, I know it is not the same, but I thought it kind of cool.

Besides being good luck, horse shoes are just plain cool to look at, they show wear, how the horse moves, if he/she needs corrective shoeing, and they are such a nice weight to just hold.

Day Off

Hi Friends,
I had a really great day yesterday. Day off! I spend it at the barn, with my new friend and Kate. I rode Sadie and Kate's horse Blitz, while Kate taught my new friend a riding lesson on Reba.
Sadie and I had a great ride.

It is really fun sharing something so important to me with other people and it was a blast to watch my new friend and Reba.

an essential lesson in riding is learning how to pose like a statue in a park, here Kate teaches them proper posing techniques

New Friends II

I know I don't really talk too much about my personal, personal life, but this new friend is too exciting not to share...

This new friend, who just so happens to have also been my Valentine recently. Is going for a PhD in Microbiology at the University of Washington, plays keyboard/vocals in a very cool indie band, "Throw me the Statue"**, is sweet, highly intelligent and downright adorable.
Yay for new friends!

P.S. no embarrassment intended towards this 'new friend', but I just could not keep quiet!

New Friend

Hi guys,
I know it has been a bit. I am taking a hiatus from knitting, not by choice, it has just kind of happened.
And then I am never sure if other things are really blog worthy, especially since most of my bloggy friends are knittahs.
Anyways, I have made a few new friends in recent weeks, one of whom is Tokyo....

I forget how cool cats are until I spend time with them. Tokyo is, obviously, really cute. He has extremely soft fur, gorgeous eyes, amazing whiskers and is very vocal. Tokyo belongs to a new friend, cuter!

In other news, we had the first fitting for the clothing line... so far things are looking great!

I have decided on the color palette I will be using for the first season (Fall 2008) of the clothing line. This is very exciting for me. Almost as fun as choosing the colors for the line is naming the colors...

Going from top to bottom:
the first group = main/neutral colors
chocolate fondue :: sailor blue :: queen's robe

second group = secondary colors
emerald :: candied orange peel :: blueberry smoothie

third group = tertiary colors/ 'pop' colors
race car :: wuthering heights :: el dorado

Who Is That Lucky Little Guy?

Last weekend was the Heart Ball! I was fortunate enough to be invited by Carie and her family. My date arrived after I did, so we got a shot of Carie, her BF and I. What a lucky little guy!

I am ashamed to admit that I have nothing on my knitting needles...bad knitta'! Things have been a little crazy around here. I have been doing some reading, Love in the Time of Cholera, Love it! Umm...what else...has anyone seen Atonement? I am dying to see it, but afraid I might need an entire box of tissues, true or false?

Fit for Fun 2008

Last night I finished the Wicker Cardigan...finally, it needed two balls more than it called for, so that was a little set back, but I held strong and persevered through to the end! It is currently blocking, and a photoshoot may be in order tomorrow.
In the mean time, I have been planning a fashion show for this...

It should be a lot of fun, so much fun, perhaps! I am hosting the launch party for "Sassy Fit", a personal training group. They are having it catered, doing fitness demos, and vacation giveaways! I will be sure to take photos of the fashion show as it will be a hoot!

Mini-Vacay!

I like going on drives. From Seattle to Hood River, Oregon is about a 4 hour drive. I put on my favorite tunes, think over things, watch scenery, bumper stickers, changes in weather, think about some more things.
I tend not to stress while going on drives like that, its more relaxing thinking...

Looking East up the Columbia River Gorge, passing over the Hood River Bridge, on my way to see Lori, Ali's mom, and their amazing home...

The bridge going from Hood River, OR, to Bingen, WA ...

On the North side of the Columbia River (after crossing the bridge) heading out to Lyle, WA...

Normally, Ali and Sunday live outside, hence the fluffy coats, but Lori recently finished the stalls in her barn with the help of her neighbor. Ali approves of her new digs!

Ali is a horse that you dream of having in your life, or even just getting to know. There is something about her, I can not explain exactly other than she is just so honest. Being able to ride her last winter got me back into the horse world after a 5 year break. Ali reminded me why horses are so special. She is a once-in-a-lifetime horse and I am so lucky to have ridden her and be able to visit her.

Ali's baby, Sunday. He is turning three this spring...too cute!

Being a baby still, he wants to get into all kinds of trouble, and like human babies, he has to put everything in his mouth, even the camera...

And coming home on I-5...I love Seattle and love coming home to my favorite city...

So that was my escape, I had a great time, it was nice to see old friends and get out of the city. Thanks for all of your comments on my last post friends! And yes, Sarah you can say "you knew me when" only if you promise to attend the first fashion show, deal? That goes for all my bloggy friends too!

Tomorrow I am off on a mini-vacation! Wooo! I am going down south to visit some old friends, including Ali, Ali's mom, and Ali's baby, Sunday!
I will be sure to take many pictures to share with you all.
On a side note...I can't keep it in any longer...I am starting my own clothing line!!! Ack, is that every girl's dream or what! You never know where this tangled road we call life will lead us, so I am hanging on, and enjoying the ride (or is it drive).

The Maisy Sweater

Maisy and her new sweater. Maisy gets cold easily, especially when her tummy is exposed to the elements. She needed a sweater, nothing too girly, with proper belly coverage. I thought maybe some cables down the back would be cute, Carie
(her mom) picked out the yarn and I took the measurements and went to work. I also did my first colorwork, the "M" on her chest. We think she likes it!

Maisy is my favorite dog, she is a french bulldog and owned by Carie, a good friend who I grew up with and recently moved home from NYC...we love them both!
